Our story

A garden that grows in salt water, not soil.

Blue Garden began on the rocky shorelines of the South Island, where three very different seaweeds have spent millions of years working out how to survive: one builds a barrier tough enough to withstand the open Pacific swell, one carries pigments strong enough to filter the sun, and one holds onto seawater through hours of low tide.

We work with small-scale wild-harvesters and a native seaweed aquaculture partner on the Kaikōura coast to bring those same compounds into three serums — nothing farmed at the expense of the reef, nothing taken faster than the shoreline can replace it.

The key ingredient

Every Blue Garden formula is built around a single hero seaweed, used at a concentration high enough to do the work its name suggests — barrier support, brightening, or hydration — then finished with a short, considered list of supporting botanicals.

Rimurimu — Bull Kelp Durvillaea antarctica

The toughest seaweed on our coastline, built to withstand the open Pacific swell without tearing. Rich in fucoidan and alginate, compounds studied for supporting the skin's own barrier and softening the look of fine lines.

Karengo Pyropia / Porphyra spp.

A native red seaweed gathered by hand from the upper tideline, prized by Māori for centuries. Its deep red-purple pigments and natural amino acids help even the look of skin tone and defend against everyday environmental stress.

Neptune's Necklace Hormosira banksii

Named for its beaded, chain-like fronds, each segment holds a reservoir of seawater so the plant can survive hours exposed at low tide. In skincare, the same water-holding polysaccharides help calm, soothe and hydrate.
